Beginners:
In this workshop, we’ll focus on the fundamentals of tin whistle playing, developing core technical skills such as fingering, breath control, scales, exercises, piper’s grip, and basic ornamentation. Alongside technique, we’ll explore musicality and improvisation, work on a simple melody, and introduce key concepts of Irish traditional music.

Intermediate:
These lessons are intended for players with prior experience on the tin whistle (or low whistle). We will build on foundational skills while exploring a range of topics, including core concepts of Irish traditional music, stylistic elements, ornamentation, piper’s grip, variation and improvisation, and overall musicality. We will also consider the whistle’s role within a band, as well as approaches to accompaniment and arrangement.

In this workshop we will learn a few tunes. We will address embouchure technique, ornamentation, and phrasing. In case you are a complete beginner and cannot play the flute at all yet, please bring a whistle in D. You will need an Irish flute in D tuning. Technique and ornamentation for a classical silver flute won’t be addressed.

The goal of the workshop will be to introduce participants to the principles of composing instrumental sets that can liven up any Irish session. Where to start? Where to continue? Where to end the set? The basic knowledge of the workshop should be that choosing tunes for sets so that they sound good at the session does not require any complicated magic, but just a little bit of ordinary musician’s thinking.

In this workshop we will look at how such a new dance can be put together, what to watch out for and what to decide on when creating. The workshop is suitable for those who want to get a feel for the process of creating dances, for those who like to create and for those who will just test the dance with us. For creation it is important to have some overview of the steps used in Irish ceilí.
